Project Updates:

Update – Jail Leadership, Succession Planning and Leadership Development

The project’s status as of July 22, 1010.

  • The 20-member national advisory panel held it’s meeting on June 17 – 19 in Fort Lauderdale. The results of those deliberations are included in the final draft report of this meeting: click here.  Comments are invited by August 6, 2010 to Dr. Christina Mancini cmancin5@fau.edu
  • The next steps in the project are:
    • The web site to help individuals and organizations prepare for succession planning and leadership development and;
    • development of a tool kit to on coaching/mentoring

  • Presentations and focus groups to gain more input about the core competencies of jail administrators have been scheduled:
    • Tuesday, August 3rd at the American Correctional Association conference in Chicago, Ill., 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Update – Jail Leadership

May 1, 2010

The project’s status as of May 1, 2010.

  • The 20-member national advisory panel has been selected, including those who work in jails with a range of average daily populations (mega-jails to small jails), geographic locations, and organizations (e.g., regional jails, consolidated systems, tribal jails).
  • The meeting of the national advisory panel will be held June 17 – 19, 2010 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The panel will advise the project regarding core competencies, and the project’s web content for the National Jail Leadership and Succession Planning Resource Center.
  • The literature review has been completed. It updates the literature review contained in The Future is Now: Recruiting, Retaining, and Developing the 21st Century Jail Workforce – which can be viewed @  http://www.cipp.org/pdf/21stCenturyJailWorkforceJan2010.pdf 
  • To view the updated literature reviews, click here.
  • Presentations and focus groups to gain more input about the core competencies of jail administrators have been scheduled:
    • Monday, May 24th at the American Jail Association conference in Portland, Oregon. Two sessions will be held; check the AJA Conference schedule.
    • Sunday, June 27 at the National Sheriffs’ Association conference in Anaheim, California. One session will be held, check the NSA Conference schedule.
    • Tuesday, August 3rd at the American Correctional Association conference in Chicago, Ill., from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Check the ACA schedule for the location.

March 1, 2010

The project’s status as of March 1, 2010.
 

  • AJA to name 20-member advisory panel to assist with developing of all project deliverables:
    • Consensus on core competencies
    • Design of the mentoring/coaching distance learning
    • Design of the leadership development distance learning
  • First advisory panel meeting tentatively scheduled for June 2010.
  • Literature review is being completed and will be posted next month.
  • Identification of existing core competencies nearing completion.
    • The process to update/gain consensus on the core competencies is nearing completion.
  • The American Jail Association and the Correctional Management Institute of Texas are working to develop strategies to design and implement a post-training mentoring/coaching program for the graduates of the National Jail Leadership Command Academy.
  • This project’s work is being coordinated with both the National Institute of Corrections and the Leadership Institute of the American Probation and Parole Association:
    • NIC’s development of curriculum for jail administrators will inform the project.
    • APPA’s experience with their Leadership Institute will also be helpful to developing the coaching/mentoring phase of this project.
